Montana Skies

I have started a series of short stories.  They are all true. The first of these will be about my trip with Jesus circling North America in 1999.  The trip lasted ten months.  30,249 miles.  They have never been published.  Hope you enjoy the adventure.

I started from New Orleans in February and headed south to Florida  DAYTONA, with my Brother-in-law.  He loaned me the money to buy the motorcycle.  I was to make two payments.  Half in one year and the other half in two years.  I just made one payment and had until February 2000 for the other.  So I had a year to make the other payment.

This is the first of these stories.  Riding with Jesus.  I developed a personal relationship with Jesus and he became my friend and comforter and all the things that Jesus said he would do came true. He kept every promise.   I didn’t start out to go on the trip.  I just got led by the Holy spirit.  I had only one obligation back in Baton Rouge to work on my brother-in-law’s house to help with reinforcing the garage roof.   I called them and talked to my sister and she told me it would be OK just wait until you get back, no hurry.  Well that was my green light.

Jesus told me to circle the continent of North America to spread the gospel, be a fisher-of-men, and establish America as the Kingdom of Heaven.

Cookie Lady

I was standing on the edge of the show area at Key West Florida with my usual mug in my hand waiting for God to send someone to me.  I usually stand where I am approachable and out of the way so I can talk. Well there is this lady there known as the Cookie Lady.  She rides an ice cream bicycle with a basket in front.  It is one of those three-wheelers.  I can always tell when someone is coming.  Their whole body language changes and the Holy Spirit kicks in.  She comes driving up and says I know God sent you to me.  I have been praying for God to send someone to tell me what to do. You are right.  In fact God did sent me.  What is your problem?

The rest of the street-performers tell me that I should charge for people to take their picture with me.  What does God say Spike?  The first thing I ask her do you have everything that you need?  At first she was going to say what she wanted, but then she realized what she was about to say; so she stopped and said “YES”. If not we would go and get it right now.   Then I told her God says serve everyone you meet.  God also says don’t sell your soul for a morsel of bread.  I asked her “Didn’t I see you selling three cookies just now?” “Yes”.  Then go and sell your cookies and let them take your picture.   She paused, looked up at me and said “Spike, that’s good stuff , she drove off ringing her bell.

Well it is a Thursday morning and I am just getting my day started with “On the Road Again” by Willie Nelson singing in my mind.  I was cursing along and there was this old skydiving sign faded by the sun.   Weekday nobody is there.  Jesus said turn this bike around you are going there.  Being obedient,  I turned around and went down the sandy road to the hanger.  There was a group of skydiver standing around their twin engine plane looking troubled.  I introduced myself and asked what was the problem.   There was the weekend coming up with a large group of tandem skydiving students coming and the plane wasn’t working well.  Being a licensed aircraft mechanic and running my own skydiving operation for 35 years, I understood their situation.

So with all this wonderful help. we started in finding and fixing the sparkplugs and wiring.  All went well and everybody was happy, we all rejoiced and were ready for the upcoming weekend.  As we worked, God offered a time for witnessing and he gets all the  glory.  By being on my trip evangelizing puts me with the opportunity to spread God’s word.

I spent about a week there.   Many seed were planted and watered before I got there.  But, I was blessed with one of  the locals telling me he knew why I was there—To lead him to Jesus.  He asked me if he could be saved and what he could do.   Standing in the middle of the hanger holding hands tears running down my cheeks, I led him through the sinners prayer.  Tell Jesus that you are a sinner.  Accept Jesus as your Savior.  Ask Jesus that you want to be saved by him.  Ask to be Baptized in the Name of the Father , Son. And Holy Spirit.  Doing this does not guarantee that you will be saved.  One must repent daily of their sins  and endure to the end.  One must constantly seek the truth and adopt that truth as a part of your life , as it is revealed to you by the Holy spirit.

As I was working my way through Nova Scotia, I had stopped at a little town near the Bay of Fundy.  My usual pastime was to shop looking for different things or one of a kind that would consolidate my existence and life on my motorcycle.  It was also a time for me to get a brake off the bike and a chance to witness , when asked for the hope that lies within me.  One thing for sure, if you are willing to be a witness for Jesus, you had better get tied on.   When I started, I was intimidated and sometimes my knees knocked being afraid that someone would ask me a question that I couldn’t answer or get it wrong.  One thing I really didn’t want to do was give false information even unintentionally.  So, I asked Jesus to show me the truth that I could build on knowing from first hand experience from being obedient.

It is now the end of June and I left in February.  So I have now about five months living on the road with Jesus.  So we have developed quit a relationship.  I just talked to him all day long and he would listen.  His voice was never audible but very clear in my head.  He would actually put words in my mouth.  I would repeat them to make sure it wasn’t just some random thought.  Not always repeating them out loud , but would repeat them in my mind like having a conversation mentally or rehearsing a speech or something like that.

Well it was one of those times when he told me to go to this little grocery.  So, I walked around looking and waiting for what he wanted me to do.  Then it happened.  There she was.  An uniquely dressed little lady who had character written all over her.  I knew now, no doubt it was the one Jesus had me stop for.  She was standing next to me looking for eggs or something different to eat or fix.  Being close to the Bay of Fundy,  I knew certainly that she would know something about the tides of the bay.  She asked me,  if I could answer her questions and with a lump in my throat I said yes!!  We got to talking, exchanging information to the point that all that needed to be said couldn’t be done standing in the isle of the store.  I told her what I was doing and my agenda.  So, she asked, if I would like to come over for some coffee.  Bingo!!!!!  That is my cue that means you can come over and if things go well, we can talk.  It is not too committal, but leaves the door open for further in-depth conversation.

After a very short drive, we arrived at her place directly on the beach of the Bay of Fundy.  Now in case you are not familiar, the Bay of Fundy changes tides every two hours 50-60 feet.  Imagine that!!!!!!!!!!  Hear you are looking out as far as you can see and what do you see?  You see the sea.  Two hours later it is a mud flat.   A MUD FLAT.  Two hours later, you see the sea.

While driving over there, I was wondering what Jesus had in mind that was so strong for me to stop.  He, Jesus, will actually force me to turn my bike around as he did many times.  God gives us free choice, but there are times when he directly interferes with the affairs of men.  Have any thoughts????  When I drove up, immediately when I saw Fred, I knew he was the answer.

So we got to know each other and the three of us just jelled.  They were hungry for answers.  They were ripe fruit ready to be picked.  They were in their middle sixties.  They had tried to go through life their way and the way society says is the norm for the 90s.  If it feels, do-it.  What is right for you is not right for me.  There are no absolute rights.  Everything is relative.  Love is that tingling feeling in your heart.  It is OK to cheat on your spouse.  Everybody is doing it.  What was wrong yesterday is right today.  Well they were in love with each other, but it hadn’t worked for years.  Something wasn’t right.  Well as it turned out they were both married and having an affair.  They thought it would all be AOK and work out, but it didn’t.  They didn’t understand there are natural consequences for our action.  They didn’t believe in that you “Reap what you Sow”.  They didn’t understand the effects of sin on our lives.  They didn’t understand that it counts for non-Christians also.  They thought they could control the truth by what they believed.

We talked for three days as long as we could stay awake.  They were giant sponges for the truth.  They were so thankful and tried to make me into their Guru.  But I told them don’t thank me thank Jesus.  He came to set us free with the truth. I am just a messenger, a fisher of men.
